From 21 to 23 July 2025, the subproject A04 at RWTH Aachen University, in collaboration with the University of Sydney, hosted the Magma Workshop on Groups and Graphs (https://www.art.rwth-aachen.de/go/id/boftog).
Researchers from Germany, New Zealand, Slovakia, and Australia participated. The workshop focused on computational aspects of group and graph theory, with particular emphasis on their implementation and analysis using the computer algebra system Magma.
Over the course of three days, participants engaged in discussions on groups, symmetries, and graphs—core mathematical tools for constructing geometric structures such as topological interlockings. The workshop brought together a diverse group of attendees, including undergraduate and master's students, PhD candidates, and academic staff. Alongside stimulating exchanges, the event also led to the development of initial Magma code that explored new theoretical ideas.
Inspirational talks by Prof. Dr Eamonn O’Brien (University of Auckland), Prof. Dr Ján Karabáš (Slovak University of Technology), and Dr Ashvni Narayanan (The University of Sydney) showcased recent advances in group and graph theory, highlighting computational challenges and applications using Magma.
We thank all participants for their valuable contributions and look forward to future opportunities to deepen the connections established during the workshop and to carry its momentum forward.
The workshop was jointly organised by RWTH Aachen and the University of Sydney, with financial support from the SFB/TRR 280 and the Simons Foundation. It was coordinated by Reymond Akpanya, Alice C. Niemeyer, and John Voight (The University of Sydney).
