Since September 2024, Universität Hamburg's Botanical Garden has been part of the CRC/Transregio 280 Collaborative Research Center, which is researching innovative construction methods together with Technische Universität Dresden and RWTH Aachen University. The focus is on the use of material-minimized carbon structures in construction based on bionic principles.
In the interview, PhD student Tom Morgenstern explains how natural models, such as bamboo and bracts, can serve as inspiration for sustainable and high-performance carbon concrete structures. Of particular interest are the structural properties of plants, which offer maximum stability despite the minimal use of materials. Hamburg makes an important contribution to research with its extensive plant collection and scientific expertise.
